What is the partnership between EPA and NIST MEP?
NIST MEP is organized under the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST provides national coordination for certified MEP centers that conduct technical reviews focused on improving efficiency and economic performance of companies through lean manufacturing. The Green Suppliers Network has partnered with NIST MEP to combine its experience in assisting companies with lean manufacturing with the knowledge of state environmental experts. Green Suppliers makes a commitment that regardless of location, each Green Suppliers Network review will be applied consistently across the country.
What is the Green Suppliers Network's relationship with other voluntary programs?
The Green Suppliers Network works collaboratively with Climate Leaders, Sustainable Futures, and Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE).
How does this program relate to ISO 14001 and Environmental Management Systems?
A Green Suppliers Network review can serve as the initial foundation for Environmental Management System (EMS) development by identifying aspects and impacts. Reviews enable suppliers to understand their current state as an industry, analyze system conditions, and consider options for improvement.
What is lean and green?
Lean and green expands the traditional definition of lean (eliminating non-value added time, labor, and capital) to one that includes environmental wastes (e.g., eliminating energy waste and toxic emissions). This targets the root causes of wasteful practices and provides a framework for achieving specific, measurable business and environmental goals. For more information about the complementary relationship between lean and the environment, visit the Lean Manufacturing and the Environment website.
How is the Green Suppliers Network affiliated with the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment?
The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment
is an official trade association that represents the automotive sector of the Green Suppliers program. Companies do not have to be members of the Suppliers Partnership to undergo a Green Suppliers Network review.
How is a Green Suppliers Network review related to enforcement/compliance?
A Green Suppliers Network review is not a regulatory inspection or an audit program. Rather, the Green Suppliers Network technical review identifies potential reductions in environmental impact at a facility. No enforcement personnel are involved in the Green Suppliers Network review team and each team member is obligated to protect your confidentiality.
